This year's Lufthansa Festival takes the 400th anniversary of Monteverdi's Vespers as the starting-point for a celebration of the leading role taken by ltalian composers in the creation of Baroque style. That work is performed by
La Venexiana on the opening night and I Fagiolini presents a programme of Monteverdi's dramatic music (May 16), La Risonanza explore the vocal music of Pergolesi and Alessandro Scarlatti (May 14) and Handel's assimilation of Italian manners is demonstrated in La Resurrezione, performed the Gabrieli Consort & Players and Paul McCreesh (May 20).

Monteverdi takes centre stage at this year's fabulous Lufthansa Festival. ltalian ensemble La Venexiana gives a 400th-anniversary performance of the iconic Vespers al St John's Smith Square on opening night, and I Fagiolini performs one of the most dramatic scenes from Orfeo alongside the gently humorous Ballo delle ingrate on 16 May. The composer is also the subject or the Lufthansa Lecture by I Fagiolini director Robert Hollingworth. Elsewhere, there's a performance by La Serenissima and leading recorder player Pamela Thorby, and Westminster Abbey Choir performs Baroque favourites Vivaldi's Gloria and Handel's Dixit Dominus under conductor James O'Donnell.
